Description

Vintage quintet of signed Elvis Presley photographs from circa 1955-1956, dated to his tenure as an emerging artist on the Louisiana Hayride, supplemented by 20 candid behind-the-scenes photographs of the future King of Rock and Roll

Collection of five vintage photographs signed by Elvis Presley, all of which were obtained by fan Louise Sheppard (née Troha) when Presley toured through Texas circa 1955 and 1956 as a contract musician with the Louisiana Hayride country music program. The photographs, which range in size from 5.25 x 3.5 to 8 x 10, feature both candid and promotional prints of Presley as an emerging talent, all signed and inscribed in ink, as follows: “To Louise, love ya too, Elvis Presley,” “To Louise, yours til when? Elvis Presley,” “To Louise, Yours, ‘love ya,’ Elvis Presley,” “To Lover, love ya lots, Elvis Presley,” and “To Louise, Yours till? Elvis Presley,” the reverse of the latter also signed by Scotty Moore. Three of the photos are affixed to magnetic photo album pages. Included with the signed photos is a two-page ALS from Elvis’s mother, Gladys Love, signed “Mrs. V. Presley,” dated September 1, 1955, and addressed to Sheppard, in part (spelling and grammar corrected): “Louise, you asked me about the pictures. I am so sorry that I don’t have one at this time…I did not get to see the pictures that Elvis took but he told me about you all and I would love to meet all of you. I appreciate everything that you all are doing for Elvis, and he does, too.” Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.

Also includes four additional magnetic photo album pages, which contain a total of 20 original candid photos of Presley and three ticket stubs, one of which is dated to Presley’s performance on the Louisiana Hayride Jamboree tour at the City Auditorium in Houston, Texas, on October 8, 1955. The other two are a bit more opaque: one stub, which mentions the Louisiana Hayride and the Galveston City Auditorium, may derive from an Elvis concert on January 16, 1956; and the third, which appears to read ‘Grand Ole Opry,’ lists a date set of April 27-29, 1954. The candid photos, which range in size from 3.5 x 2.5 to 5 x 3.5, picture Presley drinking, performing on stage, walking up stairs, posing with fans, and signing autographs, and are stamp-dated between May 1955 and January 1956. In overall very good condition, with overall creasing and a few edge tears to the signed photos; the candid photographs also bear scattered wear and tear.
