TLS, one page, 7.75 x 11.5, Prime Minister letterhead, June 30, 1986. Letter to Jerry Shoemaker, in part: "It is good to know you are encouraging others to write to people they admire. They should communicate not only with dignitaries and personages, but also with their contemporaries in other lands. This is how the great big world comes to their own doorsteps, with its horizons ever widening. Young people not only make friends easily, but respond readily to the trust and confidence reposed in them. One day the younger [gen]eration would inherit our responsibilities. If they understand each other more than we have succeeded in doing, at least they will keep their world free of bigoted conflicts and deadly weapons which threaten us today. When our children write and tell me they have many penfriends in other lands, I encourage them wholeheartedly." In very good condition, with two edge tears, creasing (heaviest to the top edge), and a few flecks of surface loss affecting the text (with a few words retouched in black ink).
