Pulitzer Prize-winning American journalist (1900–1945) who was best known for his wartime columns about ordinary GIs; he was killed during the Okinawa Campaign. Early ALS signed “Ernie,” two pages, 8.5 x 5.5, July 7, 1921. Addressed from Dana, Indiana, a handwritten letter to Peg, in full: “Your card came today and I can certainly sympathize with you in your sufferings due to the terribly hot weather. I have been working out in the sun all day, and this evening my arms, neck and face are one solid blister. In about a week I will be getting nice and black.
My swivel-chair job ended yesterday, and today I became an artist, a painter, an exterior decorator—in other words I paint barns and houses. I am tired as the devil tonight, but will soon become accustomed to this kind of work. If one doesn’t work one never knows where the next meal will come from, does one?
I received my last official notice last night to report for duty aboard the U.S.S. Wilmette on July 14, a week from today. I’m not aware as yet just how long I will have to stay in the service, but not long I hope. Will drop you a card while I am enroute.
Did Myra tell you about running into me? About three o’clock the other day I grew tired working and walked over to the Auditor’s office to chat with the girls, and who should be sitting there but Myra Allison, the last person in the world I expected to see there. She was over visiting Ray Briggs, her fiancé, you know. She said she hadn’t seen you since school was out. There are such funny clouds in the sky and it is so terribly still and hot tonight, I am afraid we will have a tornado.” Pyle crosses out the name on the letterhead and writes his own, “Ernest T. Pyle!!!” In fine condition.
Pyle joined the Naval Reserve during World War I in October 1918 at the age of 17. He served three months of active duty aboard the gunboat/training ship USS WILMETTE until the war ended, then finished his enlistment in the reserve until he was discharged in September 1921 with the rank of Petty Officer Third Class.
From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
