Description

Original World War II-era 18.5 x 26 poster promoting the purchase of Victory Bonds, with artwork by William Charles Kautz of a gold-tone central portrait plaque of George Washington Carver against a brick wall with vine, with upper and lower text, “Build for the Future / Buy Victory Bonds.” The plaque features a quote by Carver, which reads: “Without vision there is no hope. Protect your country…and your future.’” Issued as an official U.S. Treasury poster in 1945 (WFD 61) and distributed by the U.S. Government Printing Office. Professionally conservation-mounted and linen-backed to a slightly larger size. Rolled and in fine condition. Created during a period defined by Jim Crow laws and racial segregation, the poster’s inclusion of Carver stands as a notable and uncommon representation of Black achievement in wartime American poster design, highlighting themes of perseverance, contribution, and national unity.

George Washington Carver (1864-1943) was a pioneering American scientist and agricultural innovator, widely recognized for his work promoting crop diversification and sustainable farming practices. Born into slavery, he rose to prominence through his research and advocacy, encouraging the cultivation of peanuts and other alternative crops to restore soil health and support struggling farmers. By the time of the Second World War, Carver had become a widely respected national figure whose legacy carried into the civil rights movement.
