Description

Versatile German scientist (1821–1894) known for his discoveries related to visual and aural perception, electrodynamics, and the conservation of energy. ALS in German, signed “H. v. Helmholtz,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 3.75 x 6, Berlin letterhead, February 4, 1887. Handwritten letter, in part (translated): "I should have told you earlier that I have sufficiently submitted your inquiry regarding the achievements of your candidates...to the proceedings of the Academy of Sciences. The secretary felt that it was not sufficient; the publication of the paper in the 'Intelligenzblatt' of the Leipzig papers would need to suffice for that purpose. So I refrained from submitting the proposal to the Academy, and it will now be included in the mentioned session reports with a brief summary by the referees. The proposal of the esteemed Mr. Voigt seems difficult to implement. I hear that you may not have submitted your paper to the Academy, which I had forwarded in support of your application. Unfortunately, it was considered premature because my directive had not yet been followed." In fine condition.
