Description

"I did not know that both your boys were in France. That is splendid, and I congratulate you with a full heart"

World War I-dated TLS as president, one page, 7 x 8.75, White House letterhead, October 18, 1918. Letter to Rev. Richard T. Jones, in full: “Thank you warmly for your letter of the 15th. I did not know that both your boys were in France. That is splendid, and I congratulate you with a full heart.” In fine condition, with faint toning. Accompanied by the original White House mailing envelope.

A historically notable letter from President Wilson, dated to the twilight of the First World War, when serious negotiations between the Allied and Central Powers were finally underway. Five days after signing this letter, Wilson wrote to German leadership, confirming that the United States would not negotiate a peace with Germany’s existing authoritarian administration: ‘If the Government of the United States must deal with the military masters and the monarchical autocrats of Germany now, or if it is likely to have to deal with them later in regard to the international obligations of the German Empire, it must demand not peace negotiations but surrender.’

From the personal collection of a lifelong collector, teacher, and traveler with a passion for world history. His collecting years ranged from the 1970s to the present day, meaning that several of the premier pieces have not been on the market in decades.
