Union Bank of London check, 7.25 x 3, filled out and signed by Darwin, "Ch. Darwin," payable to his son, "G. H. Darwin," for £100, March 28, 1872; also endorsed on the reverse by the recipient, "G. H. Darwin." Stamped "Paid" on April 2nd. In fine condition.
Just the third Darwin check we have offered, this piece holds significant scientific and familial associations. Charles Darwin's son, George Howard Darwin (1845–1912), was himself a distinguished scientist. Working as a geologist and astronomer, he is best known for his harmonic analysis of the theory of tides, which significantly advanced understanding of tidal evolution and the Earth–Moon system. He later served as Plumian Professor of Astronomy and Experimental Philosophy at the University of Cambridge and was a Fellow of the Royal Society.
