ALS in French, signed by Salvador Dali ("Dali") and his wife ("Gala"), one page, 10.75 x 8.25, postmarked August 26, 1952. Handwritten letter to Margaret Sharney of the Castars Gallery in New York, in part (translated): "1. We impatiently await Morse's productions for possible corrections before final printing—the best, 'Taiming,' for the exhibition—public auction—2. Please send me by airmail the Parke Bernet catalog with a photo of my somewhat Cubist painting, woman and little child in a sailor suit." Here, the artist adds a small sketch of a sailor's hat, labeled "Dali."
He continues: "Very urgent—have you reserved a half-page advertisement in the New York Times? Inquiry from 'Liturgical Arts' regarding my article, Mr. Sevanon. We know nothing of Mr. Keller, where is he? Preparing an unprecedented exhibition of my work." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
Dali refers to Reynolds Morse, his close friend, patron, and most significant lifelong collector, who played a crucial role in shaping the artist’s American legacy. A Chicago industrialist with a deep commitment to Dali’s work, Morse first began acquiring Dali artworks in 1944 through the New York dealer George Keller, at a time when Dali was reestablishing himself in the United States during and after World War II. Over the ensuing decades, Morse—together with his wife, Eleanor—assembled the most comprehensive collection of Dali’s art in existence, encompassing paintings, drawings, sculptures, manuscripts, and archival material. This extraordinary collection ultimately became the foundation of the Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida.
