Description

Vintage glossy 7.25 x 9.5 photo of Pablo Picasso smoking a cigarette and holding the hand of his wife, Jacqueline, signed and inscribed in blue crayon, "Pour le Docteur Jaffe, son ami, Picasso.” The reverse bears a copyright stamp of the Cannes photography studio of Auguste Traverso. In very good to fine condition, with a small crease touching Picasso's head, and some minor crayon adhesion issues.

The recipient is ostensibly Hans Ludwig Cohn Jaffé (1915–1984), a highly influential Dutch art historian, critic, and museum curator who played a central role in shaping the postwar understanding of Cubism and Pablo Picasso’s legacy. Closely associated with the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, one of the earliest institutions to champion Picasso and modernism, Jaffé was directly involved in exhibitions and institutional decisions concerning Picasso’s work and wrote extensively on Cubism as a foundational language of twentieth-century art. As the first professor of modern art in the Netherlands, Jaffé also gained international acclaim for his 1956 doctoral dissertation, De Stijl 1917–1931: the Dutch Contribution to Modern Art.
