Description

Partly-printed DS as president, signed “R. B. Hayes,” one page, 7.75 x 10, December 5, 1878. President Hayes authorizes and directs the Secretary of State to cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to “the envelope containing my letter in reply to a letter of the Emperor of Austria, of the 27th October last, announcing the marriage of his cousin, the Archduke Frederick Maria Albert William Charles, to Princess Isabella Hedwig Francisca Natalia of Croy-Dulmen.” Signed neatly at the conclusion in ink by President Rutherford B. Hayes. In fine condition. The groom, Archduke Friedrich of Austria-Teschen, later became the supreme commander of the Austro-Hungarian Army during World War I. As such, this cordial diplomatic exchange reflects the comparatively warm relations between the United States and Austria-Hungary in the late 19th century, decades before the two nations found themselves on opposing sides of the First World War.
