Description

Civil War-dated ALS as an Ohio congressman, signed "J. A. Garfield," one page, 4.75 x 8, April 25, 1864. Addressed from Washington, a handwritten letter to M. D. Phillips, in full: "Your note of March 23rd came duly to hand. At that time I had no cartes de visite of myself. Hence the delay. Please find one enclosed.” In fine condition. Accompanied by an original 2.5 x 4 Pach Bros carte-de-visite portrait of Garfield bearing collector notations to the reverse. A notable handwritten letter from Garfield, written during his first congressional term following his resignation as a Union major general in late 1863.
