Description

American businessman (1859–1936) who was president of the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company from 1884 to 1902, overseeing the company during a time of bitter labor conflict that culminated in the deaths of two striking workers on May 3, 1886, the event which precipitated the Haymarket affair. TLS signed “Cyrus H. McCormick,” one page, 8 x 9.75, black-bordered personal letterhead, May 5, 1908. Letter to James B. Forgan, in part: "Long since I intended to have asked you if you would be able to go to Washington for May eleventh and twelfth to attend the meetings which are to be held there under the auspices of the National Civic Federation. The Welfare Department of the Federation very much desire that you address them upon the subject of the pension plan for the employees of the First National Bank, which they regard as the best pension plan in the country so far as their information goes. Mr. Steuert will show you the letter from Miss Beeks, the efficient secretary of the Welfare Department, and I must ask you to excuse the fact that pressure of other matters upon me has caused me to omit extending you this invitation until this late day." He adds a handwritten postscript, signed "C. H. McC.," in full: "If it is impossible for you to go, could you arrange for some one in your bank to go and make the statement about your admirable pension plan?" In fine condition.
