Description

Feeling philanthropic, J. P. Morgan sends one hundred copies of a William Shakespeare biography to college libraries—"forwarding bill for same to me"

Financier (1837-1913) remembered for dominating corporate finance on Wall Street throughout the Gilded Age as head of the banking firm now known as J.P. Morgan & Co. TLS signed “J. Pierpont Morgan,” one page, 5 x 6, no date. Letter to a publisher, in part: "I have read with much interest the book by Mr. Frank Harris entitled 'The Man Shakespeare,' which I observe is published by you. I am of opinion that the contents of this book are of such value to students of English literature, that I would ask you to send copies, to the extent of one hundred, to the libraries of Colleges where you consider that it will be of service, forwarding bill for same to me, at the above address." In fine condition, with a trimmed top edge.

Frank Harris’s 'The Man Shakespeare' presents a bold, highly interpretive biography that seeks to uncover Shakespeare’s personal experiences through clues in his plays and sonnets. Harris argues that Shakespeare’s works are deeply autobiographical and reflect a life marked by frustrated ambition and tragic love. Though often criticized for its speculative approach, the book remains notable for its passionate analysis and its attempt to portray Shakespeare not as a distant literary icon, but as a vividly human figure.
