Niklaus Wirth was a Swiss computer scientist (1934-2024) who designed several programming languages, including Pascal, and pioneered several classic topics in software engineering. In 1984, he won the Turing Award, generally recognized as the highest distinction in computer science, ‘for developing a sequence of innovative computer languages.’ Classic 1979 color 21.75 x 33.75 Apple Computer poster of the syntax chart for the Apple Pascal programming language, signed neatly in the upper Apple ‘rainbow logo’ in black ballpoint by Niklaus Wirth, the designer of the Pascal language. The lower left bears the preprinted signature of Tom Kamifuji, a San Francisco artist hired by Steve Jobs to implement the flow chart’s color design. Although unmentioned, the idea and design of the poster were strongly influenced by Jef Raskin, the father of the Macintosh. Framed and in very good to fine condition, with scattered scuffs and stains, most noticeably to the bottom section. Accompanied by a signed letter of provenance from Taylor Pohlman, a former product manager for Apple Pascal, who was given this signed poster by a colleague who traveled to Switzerland in 1980. A sought-after vintage Apple poster that, per Raskin, ‘ended up being over the desk of every programmer at Apple and over the desks of many programmers outside of Apple.’ Pascal creator Niklaus Wirth remains exceedingly rare across all signed formats—this being our first such example.
