Outstanding set of 16 ink signatures from the shore party of the historic Nimrod Expedition of 1907–1909, otherwise known as the British Antarctic Expedition, which was the first of three expeditions to the Antarctic led by Ernest Shackleton. The signatures are on two off-white 8.5 x 10.75 sheets of illustrated letterhead emblazoned with the emblem for “The British Antarctic Expedition, 1907 / 1909.” The first sheet is signed by the following: Ernest Shackleton (expedition leader), Jameson Boyd Adams (second in command/meteorologist), Eric Marshall (physician/cartographer/photographer), James Murray (biologist), Raymond Priestley (geologist), Philip Brocklehurst (assistant geologist), Bertram Armytage (pony handler), William Roberts (cook/assistant zoologist), George Marston (artist), Alistair Mackay (physician), Frank Wild (provisions), Ernest Joyce (general stores/zoological collections), Aeneas Mackintosh, (second officer), and Bernard Day (electrician/mechanic). The second sheet bears the signatures of Edgeworth David (director of scientific staff/geologist) and Douglas Mawson (geologist). In fine condition, with scattered light foxing and small stains.
Led by Ernest Shackleton, the Nimrod Expedition achieved a new ‘Farthest South,’ reaching within 97 miles of the Pole, discovered the Beardmore Glacier as a gateway to the interior, and made the first ascent of Mount Erebus. Despite their modest funding, Shackleton’s team advanced scientific study with vital geological, biological, and meteorological findings, while also testing the first motorized transport in Antarctica. The expedition secured Shackleton’s legacy as one of the greatest polar leaders.
