Wife and biographer (1842–1933) of ill-fated General George Armstrong Custer. ALS signed “Elizabeth B. Custer,” five pages on three sheets, 5 x 6.5, March 30, 1922. Significant handwritten letter to Sgt. Thomas Norwood, a veteran who fought with Custer in Company M of the 7th Cavalry, concerning memorials at the Little Bighorn battlefield. In full: "I have heard from Sergeant Ryan that you are a loyal friend of my husband and I am sending you a pamphlet that I prepared last summer for the forty fifth anniversary of the Battle of the Little Big Horn. I was so fortunate as to get the Century Magazine to publish an article on the battle by General E. S. Godfrey many years ago—The plates were finally destroyed, as is the custom of the magazines, after a certain number of years and I ordered new ones, copying the text of the magazine article—The illustrations had not been destroyed fortunately. They are by Frederick Remington who was in the west for years and who knew horses and hunting & camping. The little town near the battlefield of the Little Big Horn is very loyal to the 7th Cavalry and erected a statue of the General where Custer Ave crosses Custer Hiway. There is a bronze tablet with his military record on one side and a bronze medallion of the General on the other. There is to be the highest waterfall on the Little Big Horn, in the world and there are great oil fields around Harden which will call many in Montana and they will see the battle field—now a national cemetery and our heroic dead will not be forgotten." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Custer's own hand.
The Collection of Dr. Joseph Matheu.
