Description

"I have rarely seen any prediction by the wisest observer made good so completely and so soon"

TLS as president, one page, 7.25 x 8.75, White House letterhead, December 1, 1902. Letter to the Hon. Donald M. Dickinson in Detroit, Michigan, in full: "Your must just permit a personal line to say, in the first place, what comfort and strength your friendship has given me, and in the next place, to express my real surprise at the astonishing manner in which events so rapidly made good your prediction of last summer. I have rarely seen any prediction by the wisest observer made good so completely and so soon." In very good condition, with irregular toning, creasing, and two small pieces of old tape. Accompanied by a full letter of authenticity from JSA.

Roosevelt's letter likely relates to the Coal Strike of 1902, which threatened to shut down the winter fuel supply to major American cities. President Roosevelt, feeling that both capital and labor had responsibilities to the public, intervened as a neutral arbitrator and negotiated an end to the strike: the miners received a 10 percent wage increase and reduced workdays from ten to nine hours, while the owners got a higher price for coal and did not have to recognize the trade union as a bargaining agent.

His correspondent, Donald M. Dickinson, was well experienced in navigating labor unrest; shortly after he took office as United States Postmaster General in 1888, a railroad strike interrupted postal service in the United States. At that time, Dickinson refused to use federal forces to break the strike and instead modified the distribution routes so that postal deliveries could continue. A close political ally of Theodore Roosevelt, Dickinson supported the Republican ticket of McKinley and Roosevelt in 1900 and also supported Roosevelt's unsuccessful third-party run in 1912.
