Citation awarded to Edgar Mitchell by the United States Pacific Fleet, signed by Rear Admiral Herbert G. Hopwood, "H. G. Hopwood," one page, 8 x 10.5, with transmittal letter dated July 5, 1960. In full: "The Commander in Chief United States Pacific Fleet takes pleasure in commending Lieutenant Edgar D. Mitchell, United States Navy, for services as set forth in the following citation: 'For meritorious achievement in aerial flights while attached to Air Development Squadron FIVE at China Lake, California, from 1 July 1958 to 1 July 1959. As A3D Project Pilot of Air Development Squadron Five, Lieutenant Mitchell played a major role in the successful flight development of new flight techniques and tactical maneuvers for A3D-2 aircraft. He served in the capacity of pilot on numerous early flights involving these new tactical maneuvers with the A3D-2 which were considered to be extra hazardous for this type aircraft, thus demonstrating the feasibility of such tactics. Catapulted from the USS Shangri La on 25 February 1959, he flew an A3D-2 on a maximum radius mission and delivered the first MK 27 Type 2 Operational Suitability Test Weapon expended by the Navy, and thus further demonstrating the complete operational capability from an attack carrier of the A3D-2 airplane for these new flight techniques and tactical maneuvers. By his noteworthy achievements Lieutenant Mitchell has contributed materially to the Navy's carrier based heavy attack capability. His outstanding professional skill, initiative, fortitude and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.'"
