Description

ALS as president, signed “R. B. Hayes,” one page, 5 x 8, July 6, 1877. Handwritten letter to Hon. John L. Thomas, in part: "This will introduce you to my friend Gen. Geo. A. Sheridan. He will explain his purpose in calling." In fine condition, with some stains along the top edge.

George A. Sheridan (1840–1896) was a veteran of the Civil War and is known for serving for the shortest term in congressional history—he spent just one day in the U.S. House of Representatives, having been sworn in on the penultimate day of the session following a contested election in Louisiana. After his service in the House, he was appointed Recorder of Deeds in the District of Columbia by President Hayes, serving from May 17, 1878, until May 17, 1881, when President James A. Garfield fired him in order to provide the job to Frederick Douglass.
