Description

Early war-dated letter from Colonel Benjamin Harrison offering his thoughts on company promotions—"It is altogether against my convictions of what is right & I hope it will not be done"

Civil War-dated ALS signed “Benj. Harrison,” one page, 8 x 10, April 4, 1864. Handwritten letter addressed from “Head Quarters 1 Brig. 1 Div. 11 A.C., Wauhatchie, Tenn.,” which was sent to Adjutant General Lazarus Noble in Indianapolis, sending recommendations for promotions. In part: “I would respectfully recommend that 2nd Lieutenant A. Wesley Martin (Company I) be promoted to be First Lieut of said company…Thos. J. Morgan, promoted Colonel 14th U.S. Col. Infty…1st Sergt. John E. Clelland (Co I) be promoted 2nd Lieut of said company…As to the Captaincy of Company 'I' made vacant by the resignation of Capt. Wm. H. Fisher I would respectfully but earnestly ask that no appointment be made for a few weeks, or until I forward a recommendation. My mind is not yet fully made up…As to the promotion of Lt. Grubb (Co. F) to the Captaincy of I it is altogether against my convictions of what is right & I hope it will not be done.” In fine condition, with faint dampstaining affecting the right side and the signature area. In 1862, Harrison was appointed Colonel commanding the 70th Indiana Vols. As Brigade Commander, he saw action at Kennesaw Mountain, Peach Tree Creek, Atlanta, and Nashville, and was present at the surrender of Joseph E. Johnston's Confederate army. Thomas Jefferson Morgan (1839-1902), recommended in this letter, went on to command the 14th U.S. Colored Infantry and was later brevetted Brigadier General.
