Partly-printed DS as president, signed “Benj. Harrison,” one page, 8 x 10, December 12, 1891. President Harrison authorizes and directs the "Secretary of State to cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to envelope containing my letter addressed to Her Majesty, Victoria, Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, &c, &c, &c, on the birth of a Prince, son of the Princess Beatrice, Consort of Prince Henry Maurice of Battenberg." Boldly signed at the conclusion in ink by President Benjamin Harrison. In fine condition. Accompanied by a handsome matte-finish Pach Bros. portrait of President Harrison.
The youngest grandchild of Queen Victoria, Prince Maurice of Battenberg was born to Princess Beatrice and Prince Henry of Battenberg on October 3, 1891. He would serve in World War I as a Lieutenant in the King's Royal Rifle Corps, and was killed in action at Zonnebeke, in the Ypres Salient, on October 27, 1914, just 23 years old.
