Mary I (1516-1558) was the oldest daughter of King Henry VIII who ruled as Queen of England and Ireland from 1553 until her death at which time her half-sister, Queen Elizabeth I, ascended to the British throne. Her brutal persecution of Protestants earned her the nickname 'Bloody Mary.' Rare and highly sought-after ink signature, "Marye the quene,” on an off-white 3 x 1.25 slip, gorgeously matted and framed with a canvas print of her 1554 portrait by Antonis Mor to an overall size of 20.5 x 24.5.
