American religious leader (1821-1910) who founded the Church of Christ, and scientist who authored the influential text outlining its doctrines, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Scarce partly-printed DS, signed “Mary B. G. Eddy,” one page, 9.5 x 6.5, April 2, 1885. Certificate issued by the Massachusetts Metaphysical College, in full: "This Certifies That Mrs. G. P. Noyes C.S. has been my student, and is in good standing with the Massachusetts Metaphysical College, she being a member of the Christian Science Association." The certificate is imprinted with the emblem of Christian Science at left: "Heal the Sick, Raise the Dead, Cleanse the Lepers, Cast out Demons." Handsomely matted and framed with a portrait and biographical plaque to an overall size of 26.5 x 24. In fine condition, with three vertical folds.
The Church of Christ, Scientist was chartered in 1879, and in 1881, next to her home, the Massachusetts Metaphysical College was chartered. Followers multiplied and spread her teachings. In 1898, she founded the Christian Science Publishing Society, which publishes numerous periodicals and books, most notably The Christian Science Monitor. Today, hundreds of thousands around the world practice Christian Science.
