Description

Rear admiral in the United States Navy and a pioneering oceanographer and hydrographer (1845-1923) who is best remembered as the captain of USS Maine, which exploded in Havana harbor, Cuba, in 1898. The explosion set off the events that led up to the start of the Spanish-American War. Vintage matte-finish 4.25 x 6.75 cabinet portrait of Charles Dwight Sigsbee in uniform, signed on the reverse in fountain pen, "U.S.S. Texas—Navy Yard, New York, September 23rd, 1898, C. D. Sigsbee, Captain, U.S. Navy." Published by Charles Milton Bell of Washington, D.C. In fine condition. From the collection of Stephen Adamson.
