Description

Key figure in the labor movement (1850-1924) who founded the American Federation of Labor in 1886. TLS signed “Sam. Gompers,” one page, 8.25 x 11, personal letterhead, October 10, 1921. Letter to noted mining engineer, diplomat, and philanthropist John Hays Hammond on the "limitation of armaments." In part: "As yet I have not received reply from you in response to my invitation asking you to cooperate with a group wholeheartedly devoted to a constructive program for the limitation of armaments. The preliminary work anticipating the first meeting of this group has been going forward in a most gratifying way. The first meeting of the Advisory Committee will be held in Washington at the Lafayette Hotel, October 18, 1921, at 10 a.m….I sincerely hope to hear from you immediately assuring us of your cooperation, which will be of greatest value in the work anticipated." In very good to fine condition, with rusty paperclip impressions to the top edge, and light show-through at the corners from old mounting remnants on the reverse.
