Description

Surveyor and politician (1808-1859) who in 1833 hired Abraham Lincoln as his deputy surveyor in Sangamon County, Illinois. Scarce manuscript DS, signed “J. Calhoun Clerk,” one page, 7.75 x 8.75, April 5, 1847. Legal document concerning James T. Dade and Eliza B. Dade, in part: "The complainant in the above entitled cause, begging first duly, states on oath that he is informed and verily believes that said defendant is without the limits of the state of Illinois and has gone out of the state aforesaid and cannot be found on due enquiry." Signed at the conclusion by Calhoun: "Subscribed & sworn to before me this 5th day of April AD 1847, J. Calhoun Clerk." In very good condition, with several edge tears, some of which have been repaired with old tape on the reverse.
