Makonnen Wolde Mikael, known simply as Ras Makonnen (1852-1906), was a general and the governor of Harar province in Ethiopia from 1887-1906; he was the father of Emperor Haile Selassie I. Ink signature of Ras Makonnen on an off-white 4 x 3.75 slip, dated 1902 in another hand. The slip has been applied to a larger page, which bears the calligraphic inscription: "This is the original 'Signature' of 'Ras Makonnen' of Abyssinia on his Coronation Visit to London: Anno: 1902." In fine condition, with light toning and soiling.
