Description

“I shall have to take to starring, to keep from starving I suppose, however I go it alone, or rather with my wife—alone so far as male partnership is concerned”

Stage actor and comedian (1885–1891) best known as Ned Harrigan’s counterpart in their comedic duo, who were noted for humorous interpretations of immigrant minorities and were the first major Americans to use ethnicity as an important component of character development. ALS, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7, personal letterhead, May 6, 1885. Letter to playwright Edward E. Kidder. In full: “Yours at hand I shall have to take to starring, to keep from starving I suppose, however I go it alone, or rather with my wife—alone so far as male partnership is concerned—I thought of writing you—I do not want anything in the Sullivan’s order, rather on the ‘3 of a kind’—or the style you will produce for the ‘Florences’ allowing scope for music, dancing &c. If you have on hand or contemplate writing such, I should be pleased if you would submit it.” In fine condition, with a tiny tear through the upper right, slight separation to horizontal mailing fold, repaired with tape on the reverse of the first integral page, and a couple stray ink marks and brushes to the text. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
