Description

“He once voted for Roosevelt—and just afterwards experienced the great LA earthquake in William Randolph Hearst’s house. He has voted straight Republican ever since”

ALS signed “Olivia,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 6 x 6.25, January 7, 1956. Letter to journalist Radie Harris after filming The Ambassador's Daughter. In full: “I loved hearing from you and learning that the photo reached you safely. The film finished New Year’s Eve, although the last three week’s work found us with most of the cast’s chores completed and with Adolphe, Eddie Arnold, Minor Watson and our Francis all on their way home to their next assignment. Francis, I believe, went to Lisbon for a film there, and that is why you have not heard from him I am sure. Myrna Loy, Tommy Noonan and John Forsythe were the final survivors, with the first two finishing just before Christmas and John and I going on with the last day of the year. Norman is very pleased with the film, but I have a cautious nature and a hand full of curved fingers, so I shouldn’t state my opinion until a year after the picture’s release! But I think I can safely say that Christian Dior’s clothes are very, very beautiful, the photography and sets (done by Fruchmen, too) of a very fine quality, and that Myrna Loy will win everyone’s hearts all over again as Mrs. Cartwright, the Senator’s wife. And as for the Senator, Adolphe Menjou, I am sure he will be a source of much delight and amusement for the audience. We grew very fond of Adolphe, even though most of the cast were Democrats and no one could mistake him for anything but a Republican! It was really all ‘entente cordiale’!! He even lowered the barriers enough to confess he once voted for Roosevelt—and just afterwards experienced the great LA earthquake in William Randolph Hearst’s house. He has voted straight Republican ever since. Pierre and I had hoped to come over in January, but the film’s later finish, & my contract which keeps me here for another two weeks will delay this plan until later in the spring, especially as I’d like a rest first.” In fine condition, with a few light scattered creases. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RR Auction COA.
