Description

A jolly Disney sends Christmas greetings as visions of the upcoming World’s Fair dance through his head

Wonderful, scarce, colorful Christmas card from 1932, sent to Henry Scherping in Chicago, measuring 8.75 x 5 closed, opening to an overall size of 10.5 x 8.75. Top bears a color 8 x 4 print of Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Pluto, Clarabelle Cow and Horace Horsecollar taking a sleigh ride. Beneath the color image is a pre-printed sentiment, “Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse present their Silly Symphony ‘Season Greetings.’” Next to the sentiment, Disney writes, “Hoping to see you at the fair next year. Regards, Walt.” Reverse bears an address panel in another hand to Scherping, postmarked December 22, 1932, as well as a sticker of Mickey Mouse holding a Christmas tree, which was used to seal the card. In fine, bright condition, with a few small separations along folds (small areas of associated paper loss), small tear to bottom edge and a couple of folds.

Disney had very good reason to be jolly this holiday season, because Santa came a little early. On November 18, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presented an Honorable Mention Oscar award to Walt Disney Productions for "Distinctive Achievement" for the creation of Mickey Mouse. The Academy also presented an Oscar (Short Subjects, Cartoons) to Disney for the film Flowers and Trees—the first Academy Award for a cartoon.

This appealing and unusual greeting features two of Disney’s most famous creations—Mickey and Minnie—and holds the distinction of being just the third Christmas card issued by the Disney Studio, the first being issued in 1930. And the fair referenced by Walt is none other than the World’s Fair, aka the Century of Progress International Exposition, which was held in the Windy City from 1933 to 1934. Pre-certified PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
