Beige-fringed handkerchief, 5.25 x 8.5, with an embroidered color image of Happy the Dwarf in the lower portion, boldly signed in pencil to the right of the image, circa 1940, “Walt Disney,” and signed in black ink on the other side by his wife Lillian Disney. In fine condition, with light creases from previous folding, and a bit of mild toning to the fringe.
They say that behind every great man is a great woman, and Disney certainly seems to be no exception! His wife is credited with having named her husband's most famous character, Mickey Mouse. According to Disney lore, in 1928, Lillian persuaded her husband to change the smiling rodent’s name from Mortimer to Mickey because the former sounded too pompous. The rest, as they say, is history.
Around the time the Disneys graced this fabric with their autographs, fans were getting their first glimpse of the film classic Pinocchio, as well as seeing a re-release of the Academy Award-winning Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which was being shown in theaters under the title The Walt Disney Festival, after having been grouped with four other animated short films.
