Description

Congressman Garfield experiences a parent’s worst nightmare: “Our precious little Neddie died this morning”

Heartbreaking ALS signed “J. A. Garfield,” one page, 4.5 x 7, October 25, 1876. Letter to Mrs. Sumner, most likely Charles Sumner’s wife, informing her of the passing of his young son. In full: “Our precious little Neddie died this morning at 9-30—His mother and I go to Hiram to bury him—A brief service will be held at the house here, at 6 this evening—just before we start—Come to us if you can.” Edward “Neddie” Garfield, fifth son and seventh and last child of James and Lucretia Garfield was born December 26, 1874, and died of whooping cough two months before what would have been his second birthday. Edward, named after the first Garfield who came to America in the 17th century, is buried in Fairview Cemetery, Hiram, Ohio near his sister, the Garfield’s first born, Eliza Arabella Garfield, born July 3, 1860, died December 3, 1863. In fine condition, with a few slight pencil notation remnants along top edge. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
