Unsigned ALS as president, in pencil, two pages on two adjoining sheets, 5.5 x 9, Executive Mansion letterhead, no date. Letter to an unidentified recipient regarding the nomination of Paul Hebert to the Levee Commission. In part: “General Hebert graduated at West Point No. 1 in the class of 1840, served as an officer in the Engineer Corps…Col. of Volunteers during the Mexican War, and was afterwards Governor of the state…He is well qualified by education and natural ability as any man who could be selected for the superintendence of any Eng. problem and with his intimate acquaintance with the Levee system in the Miss. valley, he is the man of all others I should select if the responsibility fell upon me.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds, and some mild light toning and soiling.
