Bengali poet, playwright, philosopher, and author (1861–1941) who became the first non-European to win a Nobel Prize (Literature) in 1913. TLS, one page, 7 x 9, September 25, [1920]. Letter to Dr. Ludwig Rellssab, in full: "I thank you very much for sending me so kindly the charming setting to my 'Gitanjali' song. I have already had it played over and sung to me and I was very much pleased with its charming quality." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope.
Written at a time when Rabindranath Tagore enjoyed an international reputation as one of the leading literary figures of his generation, the letter reflects the wide cultural reach of his poetry beyond India. His work, particularly Gitanjali, attracted considerable attention in Europe and inspired numerous musical and literary interpretations during the early 20th century.
