TLS, one page, 8 x 10.5, Federal Bureau of Investigation letterhead, September 14, 1970. Letter to Congressman Henry Helstoski, in full: "I have your letter of September 4, 1970, concerning a recent directive of this Bureau curtailing certain fingerprint services.
As you know, our primary responsibilities lie in providing assistance in law enforcement matters and the FBI, as always, stands ready to furnish such assistance in criminal investigations and related activities. Our cooperation in this regard has not diminished in any way.
The services which were suspended encompassed only non-Federal applicant fingerprint cards submitted for employment and license purposes. The reason for the curtailment was explained in our letter to all fingerprint contributors dated April 27, 1970, a copy of which is enclosed for your information.
You will be interested to know that the Senate has approved our request for funds and personnel to reinstitute the non-Federal applicant-type fingerprint service. This Bill will now go to conference between the House and the Senate and upon enactment of this legislation, an appropriate announcement will be made to our fingerprint contributor resuming this service." In fine condition.
