Description

World War II-dated TLS, signed "Clementine S. Churchill," one page, 7 x 8.75, 10 Downing Street letterhead, November 9, 1942. Letter to "Mrs. Webb," in part: "I am so grateful for the kind help you have given to my Red Cross 'Aid to Russia' Fund, and for the generous contributions you have raised by the sale of your charming work. Please accept my warm thanks for your latest donation of Four Pounds, and for the sympathy you have shewn in answer to my Appeal for aid to the suffering people of Russia." In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, a TLS by the secretary of the Aid to Russia Committee, and eight receipts acknowledging "with grateful thanks your contribution to Mrs. Churchill's Red Cross 'Aid to Russia' Fund."

Clementine Churchill established her Red Cross “Aid to Russia” Fund after Germany’s 1941 invasion of the Soviet Union, raising millions of pounds for medical supplies and civilian relief. Written in November 1942, as the Battle of Stalingrad raged, this letter reflects the widespread British effort to support its Soviet ally and aid those suffering on the Eastern Front.
