Description

Austrian-born composer and violin virtuoso (1875–1962). Sheet music booklet for Fritz Kreisler’s Liebesfreud (Love’s Delight), No. 1 of his Alt-Wiener Tanzweisen (Old Viennese Dances), arranged for piano solo by the composer, seven pages, 9 x 12, published by Carl Fischer of New York. Signed prominently on the front cover in ink by Kreisler. The score bears a 1909 copyright by Charles Foley of New York. In fine condition, with light toning and handling wear to the covers, including small chips and tears. Accompanied by a November 29, 1938, transmittal letter from the secretary of music publisher Charles Foley.

Liebesfreud (Love’s Joy) is the first of Kreisler’s three Alt-Wiener Tanzweisen (Old Viennese Dances), followed by Liebesleid (Love’s Sorrow) and Schön Rosmarin (Lovely Rosemary). Originally written for violin and piano, the pieces became closely associated with Kreisler’s concert repertoire and were frequently used as encores. The original Liebesfreud was published in 1910, and Kreisler subsequently issued his own piano-solo arrangement in 1911. The piece later inspired a celebrated virtuoso transcription for solo piano by Kreisler’s friend Sergei Rachmaninoff.
