Description

Queen Isabella I issues a royal directive concerning a “christiano convertido de moro”—a Christian convert from the Moors

Queen of Castile from 1474 until her death in 1504, whose marriage to Ferdinand II of Aragon created the dynastic union that formed the basis of modern Spain; they are best remembered for establishing the Spanish Inquisition and for financing Christopher Columbus’s 1492 voyage across the Atlantic. Manuscript DS, in Spanish, signed “Yo la Reyna [I the Queen],” one page, 8.5 x 12.25, no date. Untranslated royal document signed by Queen Isabella I concerning a Christian convert from Islam, issuing instructions to royal officials regarding the individual. In fine condition, with a few areas of ink erosion and tape repairs to four diagonal cuts, apparently made as part of the document's administrative handling.
