Description

“Love + peace, John Lennon” and “Yoko Ono Lennon"—uncommon copy of Unfinished Music No. 2: Life with the Lions, featuring a pair of Lennon portrait sketches of the couple, presented to their French publicist who worked on the ‘WAR IS OVER!’ campaign

Unfinished Music No. 2: Life with the Lions album by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, signed and inscribed on the front cover in black felt tip, “To Yanou, Love + peace, from, John Lennon” and “Yoko Ono Lennon,” with Lennon adding small portrait sketches of the couple. In fine condition, with slight edgewear, and irregular ink adhesion to the start of both signatures. The record is included.

The consignor notes that the recipient is Yanou Collart, the Belgian-born French publicist who became a prominent facilitator for international celebrities in Paris. Collart began working with Lennon and Ono in 1969, when EMI Records entrusted her with distributing their ‘WAR IS OVER! If You Want It’ posters in France, and she later produced Ono’s bed-in exhibition in Paris. Her extensive celebrity clientele also included Paul McCartney, Kirk Douglas, Jerry Lewis, and Jack Nicholson.

The album’s front cover reproduces a photograph taken in Yoko Ono’s room at Queen Charlotte’s Hospital in London following her miscarriage in November 1968, with Lennon pictured on the floor beside her bed after his own hospital bed was needed for another patient. Released in May 1969 on Zapple, Apple Records’ short-lived label for spoken-word and experimental recordings, Life with the Lions was the second of three collaborative avant-garde albums by Lennon and Ono, following 1968’s Two Virgins. Side one comprises a single half-hour improvisation recorded live at Cambridge University on March 2, 1969, Lennon’s first public performance without the Beatles since the group’s formation; side two was recorded on cassette in Ono’s hospital room and includes the heartbeat of the couple’s unborn child.
