Paperstock 6 x 8.25 catalog or magazine photo of Pablo Picasso’s 1906 painting, ‘Autoportrait à la palette’ (Self-Portrait with Palette), signed and inscribed in the lower border in blue ink, “Pour Cristina, Picasso, Le 17.6.55.” Affixed to an 8.25 x 10.5 cardstock mount and in fine condition, with trivial small creases and toning to edges.
Picasso's 1906 Autoportrait à la palette resides in the Philadelphia Museum of Art as part of the A. E. Gallatin Collection, received as a gift in 1950. The oil on canvas portrays the 25-year-old artist holding a palette in his left hand; preparatory drawings included a brush in his right, an element he omitted from the finished work. Earlier that year, Picasso had completed a smaller self-portrait, now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, around the time he finished his celebrated portrait of Gertrude Stein; the Philadelphia canvas followed shortly after and may have been conceived as a pendant to the Stein portrait. The large ovoid eyes, heavy brows, and elongated ears characteristic of these works reflect Picasso's engagement that year with ancient Iberian sculpture.
