Herb Klein tells me you have been in the hospital. You are a great fighter and I'll look forward to hearing the welcome news that you are back home. Nixon wrote this letter at a pivotal moment in the Vietnam War, on the very day that the Agreement on Ending the War and Restoring Peace in Vietnam was initialed in Paris by Henry Kissinger for the United States and Le Duc Tho for North Vietnam. That evening, Nixon addressed the nation from the Oval Office to announce that an agreement had been reached to end the war and bring peace with honor in Vietnam and Southeast Asia; the Paris Peace Accords would be formally signed four days later, on January 27th. Against this immediate backdrop, Nixon's assurance to Copley that the administration was pursuing the right course to bring an honorable peace takes on particular significance, having been written as the administration prepared to publicly announce the culmination of years of negotiations. Recipient James S. Copley, publisher of the Copley newspaper chain and a longtime Nixon supporter, is addressed by the president as an old and trusted friend. Nixon's reference to Herb Klein further reflects their longstanding political and professional connections: Klein had worked for the Copley newspapers before and after serving in Nixon's communications operation.
