Description

TLS as president, one page, 7 x 9, White House letterhead, October 3, 1908. Letter to Hamilton Fish II, the Assistant Treasurer of the United States: “I am in receipt of your letter of the 2d instant tendering your resignation as Assistant Treasurer of the United States at New York City, and accept it as of October 31st. Under any ordinary circumstances I would feel the keenest regret at your severing your connection with the Government service, for you have done exceptionally efficient work. As it is, my personal regret at your being no longer connected with the administration is tempered by my belief that you can do even more useful work in Congress.” In fine condition.

Hamilton Fish II was the son of Hamilton Fish, who served as Governor of New York, U.S. Senator, and Secretary of State under President Ulysses S. Grant. The younger Fish followed a path deeply rooted in public service, having served as his father's private secretary during his tenure at the State Department before pursuing his own political career, including terms in the New York State Assembly, where he rose to Speaker in 1895 and 1896. President Theodore Roosevelt appointed Fish Assistant Treasurer of the United States in 1903, a post he held until his resignation in October 1908. As Roosevelt anticipated, Fish's departure from the Treasury was indeed a step toward Congress rather than away from public service: he was elected that November to represent New York's 21st district in the Sixty-first Congress, serving a single term from 1909 to 1911. Fish would go on to become an influential Republican party figure in New York, and his son, Hamilton Fish III, and grandson, Hamilton Fish IV, both later followed him into the House of Representatives, extending the family's congressional legacy across three generations.
