Flown ablative heat shield plug from Skylab II, measuring approximately 1.25˝ x 1.25˝, encased in a Lucite cylinder measuring 3˝ across and 2.5˝ tall, engraved on the bottom: "Skylab II, May 25–June 22, 1973." In fine condition, with some light scratches to the Lucite.
This flown heat shield plug is a tangible remnant of Skylab 2, the first crewed mission to America’s first space station, launched on May 25, 1973. Ablative material protected the Apollo command module from the tremendous heat of atmospheric reentry—visually evidenced by its charred condition—making this piece directly connected to the spacecraft’s safe return.
