Description

Manuscript DS in Latin, signed “Carolus P,” one page, 14.75 x 10, April 11, 1620. Royal grant issued by the future King Charles I to James Helier, Esq., a gentleman of his privy chamber, in consideration of his past and future service, granting him a yearly pension of £100, payable for as long as the prince saw fit. Signed prominently in the upper left by Charles, Prince of Wales. In fine condition, with light scattered staining and soiling, most notably to the edges.

At the time he signed this document, Charles was Prince of Wales and heir apparent to his father, James I, having received the title in 1616; he would succeed to the throne upon James’s death in March 1625. As a Gentleman of the Privy Chamber, Helier belonged to the prince’s household and held an office associated with personal attendance and access to the royal private chambers. Pensions were an established instrument of Stuart patronage, providing financial rewards for service to the crown and royal household. This grant, issued five years before Charles’s accession, records the future king exercising patronage within his own household.
