On September 11, 1969, less than two months after their return from the Moon, the Apollo 11 crew – Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins – sat for photographer Yousuf Karsh in the Astronaut Library at NASA’s Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston. The astronauts greeted Karsh by posting a sign outside his makeshift studio reading, ‘Karsh. No Contamination.’ During the session, Collins used a relief map of the Moon to mark and sign a ‘Karsh Crater,’ while Armstrong asked Karsh about European cities, explaining that he ‘had never been anywhere’; Karsh politely reminded him that he had just returned from the Moon. Armstrong later presented Karsh with a signed photograph of his lunar bootprint, inscribed with his famous words, ‘That’s one small step for a man; one giant leap for mankind.’
