Flown ALS in Russian from Sergei Krikalev to fellow cosmonaut Sergei Zalyotin, one page, both sides, 8.5 x 11, handwritten aboard the International Space Station during its historic first resident expedition on December 4, 2000. Krikalev writes about life and work aboard the newly inhabited ISS, comparing the experience with Zalyotin's recent service aboard Mir and discussing the station's equipment and operations. The letter bears several onboard ISS postal markings, including circular "Main Expedition / ISS" and octagonal "Board of the International Space Station / ISS" stamps. Includes its original hand-addressed envelope to “Sergey Zaletin" in the Moscow region of Russia, likewise bearing onboard ISS postal markings. The cover was subsequently returned to Earth and entered the terrestrial postal system, with U.S. registered-mail postage and markings documenting its routing through Houston, Texas, followed by Russian registration and receiving markings on the reverse. Written barely a month after Sergei Krikalev, William Shepherd, and Yuri Gidzenko entered the ISS on November 2, 2000, this letter dates from the beginning of permanent human habitation aboard the station. Expedition 1 was the first long-duration crew of the ISS, charged with activating its systems and transforming the still-developing orbital complex into a functioning home and laboratory. Its recipient, Sergei Zalyotin, had commanded the final resident expedition aboard Mir earlier that year, while Krikalev was serving as flight engineer of the first resident crew of its successor. Reflecting upon their respective experiences aboard the two outposts, the correspondence provides a direct connection between the closing chapter of Mir and the opening months of permanent habitation aboard the International Space Station.
The onboard cancellations and subsequent postal markings document the letter's journey from orbit into the terrestrial mail system. Surviving Expedition 1 correspondence is documented as having been written and postmarked aboard the ISS and subsequently carried back to Earth, with other examples described as belonging to the earliest mail dispatched from the station. Dated December 4, 2000, just 32 days after Expedition 1 entered the ISS, this is an early piece of personal correspondence from humanity's newly occupied orbital outpost.
