Manuscript DS, signed “George R.,” one page, both sides, 7.75 x 12.25, September 22, 1826. Royal warrant issued from Windsor Castle directing the Lord Chancellor to affix the Great Seal of the United Kingdom to an accompanying Full Power authorizing William Huskisson and Henry Unwin Addington “to meet, confer, treat, and conclude” with commissioners representing the United States. Signed prominently at the top of the first page by King George IV, and countersigned on the reverse by Foreign Secretary George Canning. The warrant retains its original paper wafer seal, blue binding ribbon, and its contemporary copy of the Full Power referenced in the text, which opens by stating that “certain matters are now in discussion between Us and Our Good Friends the United States of America,” before appointing Huskisson and Addington as "Our true, certain, and undoubted Commissioners, Procurators, and Plenipotentiaries” empowered to negotiate and conclude agreements on behalf of the Crown. In fine condition. Issued on September 22, 1826, this warrant belongs to a pivotal period in Anglo-American diplomacy, as Great Britain and the United States worked to resolve a series of outstanding questions that remained after the War of 1812.
