Dramatic production contract between Mae West and theatrical manager Jack Small, granting Small the exclusive rights to produce West's play Diamond Lil in the United States and Canada. The agreement outlines the terms of production, including advance payments, royalty rates, billing, and profit participation, while stipulating that West would star in the production and retain key creative and financial rights. Signed at the conclusion in ballpoint by West, who adds her initials to three “Additional Clauses” pages. Attached is a 15-page “Supplemental Provisions” packet. In fine condition, with scattered stains to the first few pages.
Diamond Lil (1928) was the play that established Mae West as a Broadway star and permanently defined the bold, wisecracking persona that became synonymous with her name. Her first major theatrical success, it was adapted into the landmark 1933 Paramount film She Done Him Wrong, one of the biggest box-office hits of the early sound era, and remained her signature role for the rest of her career through numerous revivals and tours.
