Description

"Cassius Clay" signs with Columbia Records to produce the spoken-word album I Am the Greatest!

DS, signed “Cassius Clay,” thirteen pages, 8.5 x 11, May 17, 1963. Columbia Records contract in which the legendary boxer agrees to render "services at recording sessions at our studios…for the purpose of making phonograph records." It notes that "the compositions to be performed…shall be primarily spoken word." Signed at the conclusion in blue ballpoint by Cassius Clay, and countersigned in ink by Executive Vice President Norman A. Allen. Ten amendments throughout the document are also initialed by Clay, "C.C." In fine condition.

This contract resulted in Clay’s landmark spoken-word comedy album I Am the Greatest!, recorded before a live audience and released by Columbia in August 1963. Built around his exuberant poems, predictions, and taunts of heavyweight champion Sonny Liston, the Grammy-nominated record captured the rhythmic wit and audacious self-promotion that would soon make Clay a cultural phenomenon—six months before he defeated Liston, claimed the heavyweight title, and became Muhammad Ali.
