Pencil signature, “Picasso,” on the off-white 3 x 2.25 visiting card of Andre Bernard, manager of French guitarist Manitas de Plata. Includes a vintage glossy photo of Picasso signing a guitar for Manitas de Plata, with the reverse stamped, “Collection, Andre Bernard.” Per the consignor, Bernard personally organized the private evening with Picasso and Manitas at Notre-Dame-de-Vie, Picasso’s home in Mougins, during which Picasso signed the card. In fine condition, with light overall toning.
Picasso had a longstanding interest in flamenco and greatly admired Manitas de Plata, the celebrated French-born Romani guitarist who rose to international fame in the 1960s. After hearing Manitas perform, Picasso is famously reported to have declared that the guitarist was ‘worth more than I am.’ The two met on several occasions, with Picasso famously decorating and signing Manitas’s guitar during one of their encounters.
